Understanding Kidney Stone Lithotripsy
Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (commonly called ESWL or lithotripsy) has been available in the United States since 1984. This non-invasive treatment of urinary stones is performed by a urologist utilizing a machine called a lithotripter. Using x-ray fluoroscopic guidance, your physician, along with a specially trained radiologic technologist, will target the exact location of your kidney stone. The shock waves are then aimed at the stone, which is fragmented into sand like particles, small enough to be passed through normal elimination. Each treatment takes approximately 30-45 minutes and the majority of treatments are performed under IV sedation which maintains patient comfort during the procedure. |

The New Jersey Kidney Stone Center, LLC provides the HealthTronics LithoTron Lithotripter, one of the most effective lithotripsy machines on the market. The Lithotron Lithotriper utilizes spark gap technology to generate shock waves inside a water balloon which is placed up against the outside of a patient’s body. The created shock wave is carefully focused into the patient’s body and can thereby fragment urinary calculi within either the kidney or ureter. The LithoTron is composed of (1) a shock wave generator unit; (2) a control cabinet; (3) a C-arm fluoroscopy device; and (4) a motorized patient treatment table. |
